Montclair State University Honors Fire Prevention Week October 8-14, 2006

As in past years, Montclair State University’s Fire Safety Department will join the rest of the nation in observance of Fire Prevention Week, October 8-14, 2006.

Established to commemorate the victims of the Great Chicago Fire of October 8-9, 1871, Fire Prevention Week has been observed in the U.S. for more than eight decades. While researchers are still debating the cause of The Great Chicago fire (conclusions range from a cow mishap to cigarettes to fallen meteorites), most historians and fire officials agree that the tragic conflagration forced public officials to reevaluate their safety practices and prioritize fire safety.

Throughout the week of October 8-14, 2006, the Fire Safety Department will hold campus-wide events to increase public awareness about fire prevention. These efforts include, for example, fire-extinguisher training, public service announcements, firefighter visits to the Childcare Center, and promotional giveaways.

The director of Fire Safety, Robert Ferrara, urges all members of the campus community to participate in Fire Prevention Week. Please check your email for details of events.
