SUSPENSION

Academic suspension is a very serious status that Montclair State applies to students who have a cumulative GPA that falls below 2.0 for two terms. Students who reach academic suspension status cannot enroll for courses at Montclair State for a full calendar year. There is an appeal process for suspended students.

Students who return to Montclair State after academic suspension move - conditionally - to readmit-from-action status. The conditional readmit-from-action status is granted only to students who demonstrate during the suspension year that they're prepared to succeed academically.

CAAAL therefore recommends to students who have been suspended that they complete at least 15 academic credits and achieve a minimum GPA level of 2.5 at a NJ community college. The NJ Transfer website provides extensive information about the 15 credit and 2.5 GPA thresholds.

Students who are granted re-admission to Montclair State must complete their first term after the suspension year with a term GPA of 2.0 or higher in order to reach academic-monitoring status, a condition that grants one more term to raise a cumulative GPA to 2.0 or higher. Courses for which students received grades of D or F must then be repeated at Montclair State with a satisfactory grade.

Students with academic-monitoring status who do not raise their GPAs to a 2.0 or higher are dismissed.
