RED HAWK MEN TOP DIVISION I PROVIDENCE, 133-108; WOMEN FALL TO FRIARS

Montclair, NJ (11/10/07) – Senior Ricky Miller (Seaside Park, NJ / Monsignor Donovan) won three individual events while freshman Blaise Lacca (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township) added two more individual wins as the Montclair State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split a dual meet with Division I Providence College at the Panzer Pool on Saturday.

Sophomore John Adams (Wharton, NJ / Pope John XXIII) won the 200 backstroke and also helped the 400 medley relay to a win as the MSU men posted a 133-108 victory over the Friars. It was MSU’s third consecutive win as it improved to 3-1. Meanwhile the MSU women’s team (2-2) fell to Providence, 138-101.

Mille captured the 200 freestyle, 200 fly and 500 freestyle as the Red Hawks won nine of the 13 events contests. A team captain, Miller posted a time of 1:49.89 in winning the 200 free and then swam 5:04.58 in taking first in the 500 freestyle. Miller completed his day by winning the 200 fly with a time of 2:05.47.

Lacca and Adams went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle with time of 22.82 and 23.00, respectively. Lacca would go on to capture the 100 freestyle (50.69) and Adams took top honors in the 200 back stroke (2:04.85). The duo then combined with Jon Kurtz ( Stockholm, NJ / Vernon Township) and Joseph Knolmajer ( Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) to win the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:47.00.

Kurtz would win the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.64 with Brandon Sands (Easton, PA / Wilson Area) rounding out the MSU victories as he claimed the 1000 freestyle at 10:41.95.

On the women’s side, freshman Brittany Cole ( Linden, NJ / Linden) was a triple-winner for the Red Hawks. Cole won the 50 freestyle as she led a 1-2-3 Red Hawks finish posting a time of 25.73. Raquel Erwin (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood) and Kristine Bates ( Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) had times of 26.39 and 26.50, respectively. Cole would add a win in the 100 freestyle (5..51) and swam the second leg of the 400 freestyle relay (4:26.49) as she was joined in that race by Bates, Erwin and Kaitlin Muchler (Vineland, NJ / Vineland).

Sophomore Laura Flynn ( Andover, NJ / Lenape Valley) was the other individual winner for Montclair State as she won the 200 fly with a time of 1:33.96.

The Red Hawks return to action next Friday and Saturday, November 17-18 as they compete at the Golden Bear Invitational at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.
