MARTONE, SCILLIERI LIFT RED HAWKS PAST NYU 3-2,
Montclair, NJ, (10/21/07) - A goal by Montclair State University freshman Christyn Scillieri (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) at 68:56 broke a 2-2 tie as the Red Hawks defeated New York University 3-2 in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Sprague Field in Montclair, NJ.
Freshman forward Rebecca Assing (Greenwich, CT / Greenwich) tickled the twine twice in the second half for the Violets (10-4-1), who nearly overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit before dropping their fourth straight decision.
Freshman Scillieri and junior defender Angela Martone (Toms River, NJ / Toms River South) each tallied a goal and an assist for the Red Hawks (7-8-1).
Trailing 2-0 at the break, NYU quickly split its deficit in half just 22 seconds into the second stanza. Freshman forward Filiz Kipcakli (Port Washington, NY / Paul D. Schreiber) made a run along the endline and floated a cross to Assing, who rose above Montclair State Leah Tepperman (North Andover, MA / North Andover) (two saves) goalkeeper and headed it home.
After consistenly forcing the issue in the final third of the pitch, the Violets got the equalizer at 65:33, again off the head off Assing. After sophomore midfielder Lucy Dolly Caires' (Honolulu, HI / Iolani School) corner kick got cleared out of the box, freshman midfielder Britta Gauthier collected it on the right flank and sent a high pass into the box that Assing redirected for her team-high eighth tally this season.
However, the Red Hawks snapped the 2-2 deadlock at 68:56 when Scilleri slid a shot across the goal line, her ninth goal of the year, off a feed from Martone.
Martone started the scoring for the Red Hawks, blasting home a one-timer off a Scillieri pass from 25 yards out at 22:12. Sophomore forward Natalia Sisti (Lincoln Park, NJ / DePaul Catholic) netted her team-best ninth goal, getting off a strong shot as she lost her balance, to make it 2-0 at 31:42.
Between the pipes for NYU, senior Katie Barnes (Boston, MA / Boston Latin School) started and played the first 45 minutes, making one save. Junior Rebekah Kramer (Middletown, DE / Middletown) played the second half and made one save while also allowing a goal.
Both teams got off nine shots, while NYU owned a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
NYU returns to action Friday, Oct. 26, when it travels to Pittsburgh to face University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Carnegie Mellon University at 7:30 p.m.
