Co-op is an experiential education program providing preparation, counseling,
work experience, academic projects (assigned by Co-op faculty advisor),
and debriefing. These activities will enhance academic learning, build
maturity, and develop insight, while preparing graduates to function effectively
in the workplace. Because Co-op is an academic program, Montclair State
University expects students to integrate the learning that goes on in
the workplace with their formal studies. This is the vital role Co-op
faculty advisors play in the process.
Once you accept a position with an employing organization and officially register for a Co-op course, you are assigned to a Co-op faculty advisor who will supervise the academic component of Co-op. Together, you and faculty will develop a learning agreement that outlines the academic projects to be completed during the term. Certain academic departments require that their Co-op students attend a series of seminars during the co-op term. These seminars, facilitated by your Co-op faculty advisor, are designed to foster discussion and reflection on relevant work and career-related issues. The Co-op faculty advisor will also monitor the students' worksites and communicate with the students during the Co-op semester. All Co-op students receive a letter grade and course credit for successfully completing their Co-op internship. The same Co-op faculty advisor who worked with you from the beginning will award the grade based on a combination of worksite accomplishments and fulfillment of the terms of the learning agreement. |
