Geographic Area of Interest

The geographic area of interest for our COPC program is the Pine Street/Glenfield Park sections within the Township of Montclair, Essex County, New Jersey. This area is an enclave which can be thought of as a "community within a community," with characteristics dissimilar from other sections of Montclair and the Township of Montclair as a whole. Originally an African American and Italian American working class community, the area has a rich and complex history dating back to the early 20th century. This area maintains a sense of community and significant assets despite demographic and economic changes, upheaval caused by an urban renewal redevelopment project in the late 1960s and the current installation of the "Montclair Connection" train line into Manhattan.

Placed within the context of Montclair's acclaimed prosperity and racial and economic diversity, this area emerges as an economically threatened and racially segregated yet viable area urgently seeking to re-establish its history, sense of pride, cohesion, and unique identity. In collaboration with our community partners, Montclair State University, through its COPC initiatives, is engaging in activities to address issues pertaining to community organizing, housing, and education. Our goal is to provide the resources necessary for empowering and enfranchising area residents on both a social and political level.
