General COPC Overview

The three-year Montclair State University (MSU) COPC, typical of many campus/community partnership endeavors, produced both beneficial and controversial outcomes. Over its three years, the MSU COPC did far more than simply meet its stated project and activity objectives; it served as a vehicle for developing substantial and enduring relationships between numerous community and university stakeholders.

The final MSU COPC report reviews the over-arching accomplishments of the MSU COPC including institutionalization, faculty involvement and development, and the celebration and dissemination of knowledge. Additionally, the report discusses the challenges and lessons learned through the development and implementation of the MSU COPC and the future of partnership at MSU. Finally, the report details the individual project and activity specific accomplishments within each of the MSU COPC functional areas; community organizing, housing, and urban education. Building the PineRidge Neighborhood Network Center

In 2000 Dr. Freyda Lazarus, Director of the Center of Community-Based Learning (CCBL) at Montclair State University (MSU), was made aware of the Neighborhood Network Center program while preparing a HUD Community Outreach Partnership Center (COPC) grant proposal. With the goal of addressing social issues such as aging and the digital divide, the COPC appeared to be an ideal vehicle for the creation of a Neighborhood Network Center. Determined to build the Neighborhood Network Center concept into the MSU COPC proposal, Dr. Lazarus sought further information from community and governmental partners such as Beverly Riddick, the Executive Director of HOMECorp, and Karen Kadus the Director of Planning and Community Development for the Township of Montclair. Dr. Lazarus was eventually directed to Cindy Jacques, Special Assistant to the President of United Methodist Homes of New Jersey, who had coincidentally written Dr. Susan Cole, MSU President, expressing her interest in the COPC related town-wide meeting she had recently read about in the Montclair Times. Thus began a new and exciting partnership between the CCBL and United Methodist Homes of New Jersey. To read more of this report then click here.
