Community Organizing

The goal of the COPC community organizing activities is to improve residents' capacity to work together in addressing specific needs. All activities are geared toward developing networks of communication, trust, and reciprocity, in order to increase the benefits associated with these forms of social capital; and toward promoting community identification, pride, and responsibility. In short, the goal is to organize the residents and nurture leadership.

Montclair Community Directory
Associations and organizations are vital parts of communities. With this in mind, residents, COPC partners, MSU faculty, staff, and students have inventoried local organizations and resources available to Montclair residents. This directory focuses on resources available to residents near the new Bay Street train station, many of which will be useful to residents of other areas.

The Montclair Community Directory is a work in progress. To view the directory click here. A link is available for the submission of corrections and new listings for the directory.

Community Heritage Documentation
Through a program sponsored by the MSU COPC, Italians and Italian-Americans whose families live or have lived and worked in the township of Montclair are documenting their stories as part of a local history project. "The goal is to collect and preserve the precious traces of the Italian-American experience in Montclair throughout the community's history from the late 19th century to present," explained Marisa Trubiano, assistant professor of Italian, who heads the project.

The url to the Italian experience in America story is:

Documenting this rich history is ongoing. If you know of an individual that is willing to share their memories (from the everyday to the extraordinary) Please e-mail Marisa Trubiano: Trubianom@mail.montclair.edu or call 973/655-7950.
