IGLHRC's mission is to protect and advance
the human rights of all people and communities subject to discrimination
or abuse on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or HIV status.
"Every day, in countries throughout the world,
the fundamental human rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, trangendered
people, and people with HIV and AIDS are violated. These abuses include:
murder; incarceration; forced psychiatric "treatment"; torture; arbitrary
arrest and detention; denial of the freedoms of association, press, and
movement; denial of the right to seek refuge/asylum; immigration restrictions;
forced marriage; the revocation of parental rights; and numerous other
forms of discrimination."
Amnesty International campaigns to free
all prisoners of conscience: people detained anywhere for their beliefs,
or because of their ethnic origin, sex, colour, language, national or social
origin, economic status, birth or other status -- who have not used or
advocated violence. Their action alerts help focus a global spotlight
on abuses of political & human rights, not only by governments,
but by non-governmental opposition groups.
AI Members For Lesbian & Gay Concerns
are among its 'Specialist
Networks': "...in some countries these contacts represent a large number
of active members campaigning against human rights violations perpetrated
against individuals or groups because of their sexuality."
Human Rights Watch works to end a broad
range of abuses: summary executions, torture, arbitrary detention,
restrictions on the freedom of expression, association, assembly and religion,
violations of due process, and discrimination on racial, gender, ethnic
and religious grounds - "regardless of whether the victims are well-known
political activists or those of lesser visibility such as factory workers,
peasant farmers, illegal immigrants, women forced into prostitution, street
children, or domestic workers."
HRW also addresses war-related abuses (indiscriminate
shelling, or the use of rape or starvation as weapons of war) no matter
which side in a conflict is responsible.
