Documentary about Montclair screened at library
Montclair State's Community Outreach Partnership Center Advisory
Committee (COPC) sponsored the premiere of the film "Montclair: an
Evolving Community," a documentary about the Pine Street and Glenfield
Neighborhoods of Montclair on Oct. 25 at the Montclair Public Library.
The event included Ed Remsen, mayor of the Township of Montclair, members
of the committee and its partners, and featured a discussion of what MSU
is learning through COPC about campus-community partnerships.
With funds from COPC and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, Bill
Berlin of Political Science, who directed the film, developed a script
capturing the history of the Pine Street and Glenfield Park neighborhoods.
Berlin compiled information from faculty and students, local historians,
long-term neighborhood residents, and local civil servants and politicians,
and developed three topical interview segments mirroring the MSU COPC
issue areas: housing, community organizing and urban education.
Using Berlin's segments, Patricia Piroh, coordinating producer of "Carpe
Diem," and Lawrence Londino, executive producer of "Carpe Diem,"
planned and produced three "Carpe Diem" specials, Montclair,
Then and Now; Montclair Race and Ethnicity; and Montclair, Education and
Housing (see What's Happening for dates and
times).
A 10-year-old initiative of the Department of Housing and Urban Development,
the COPC program provides three-year grants to encourage institutions
of higher education to join in partnerships with agencies and groups located
in their adjacent communities to play an active role in community revitalization.
September marked the end of MSU's $400,000 grant period.
