President Cole named to Governor's Higher Ed Transition Team
New Jersey Governor-Elect Jim McGreevey named the members of his transition team, including President Susan A. Cole, who will co-chair the Higher Education Transition Committee along with former governor Tom Kean, president of Drew University; Rev. Dr. William Howard, Pastor of Bethany Baptist Church in Newark; and Assembly Minority Leader Joseph Doria.

"These individuals have offered to give of their time and their wisdom to help us begin this important work. They bring decades of experience, and a deep understanding of the complexities of the work before us, and we are fortunate to have their help," McGreevey said.

MSU lauded twice by Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education
For the fifth straight year, Montclair State University has been labeled an educational leader by a prominent national higher education magazine.

Montclair State has been selected as a "Publisher’s Pick" by Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine. In its Nov. 19 issue, publisher Jose Lopez-Isa said the magazine's 2001 "Publisher’s Picks" honors "our annual list of colleges and universities we see as offering outstanding opportunities to Hispanic students...We commend and celebrate these institutions. May they continue to build on those strategies they now have in place to prepare, recruit and support Hispanics, and others less advantaged, in their quest for education."

Additionally, MSU was cited as one of the "Top 100 Schools Graduating Hispanics" nationally, the fourth time the University has been so honored.

"Montclair State is proud of the diversity and cultural richness of our university community," said President Susan A. Cole. "New Jersey's Hispanic community is growing rapidly, and we are proud to be an important and successful educational resource for this ambitious population.

"We are pleased to be honored by this outstanding educational magazine for the fifth consecutive year, and truly appreciate its wonderful validation of the success of our broad-based educational mission."

Lopez-Isa noted that 7,000 high school guidance counselors nationally receive the "Publisher’s Pick" issue.

Natural gas-powered car tested on campus
Montclair State was part of a study that utilized a natural gas-powered car for a month. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the car's efficiency and cost effectiveness.

The Volvo wagon was driven earlier in the year by several members of Physical Plant, including Dave Pino, mechanics supervisor, who put about 175 miles on the vehicle in two weeks. "It has perfect performance and good pickup," Pino said. "It is efficient but not effective for MSU's needs. It had enough power, but refilling the tank was inconvenient. Also, there was not much room for transporting items because the back was filled with fuel cells."

The towns of Glen Ridge, Verona and Montclair also took part in the research. The cost of the project is underwritten by the state Regional Development Incentive Program.

Faculty lead workshop in Spain right from College Hall
Last month faculty from Health Professions, Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies (HPPERLS) presented a two-hour workshop at the fitness management conference in Seville, Spain…without ever leaving campus.

State-of-the-art technology in the Distance Learning Room, College Hall, Room 310, made the international workshop possible.

Alumnus Adolfo Gimenez '93, head of Sports Facilities in Seville, contacted Tim Sullivan of HPPERLS this summer to discuss how the University could play a role in a workshop he was organizing. Sullivan suggested a teleconference led by Montclair State faculty.

With the help of Information Technology and faculty members Susana Juniu, Eduardo Saavedra, Dick Tobin and John Sanz, the workshop was presented to 97 participants in Seville.

After an introduction by Sanz, Saavedra, a former member of the Educador Olympic Gymnastics team and an administrative assistant in HPPERLS, spoke about the principles of physical training and its implications for the fitness industry. Juniu provided a review of the impact of technology in the fitness business by using a Power Point presentation with Spanish text, and Tobin spoke about opportunities for financial success within the industry. The presentations were followed by a question and answer session.

"This type of technology is still a dream for some," Sullivan said. "At Montclair State it is a reality."
