Welcome
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson T. Jacobowitz at 12:15
when the body achieved a quorum.
J. Harris made a motion to approve the minutes of December 18 with the
deletion of IIIA which read, Support is diminished at a time
J. Ficke offered a second. Motion carried.
II. Committee Reports
A. Education J. Harris
The Education Committee has not met, but J. Harris reported on the work
for Affirmative Action Day on February 26. SC-411-414 has been reserved.
C. Stochelski will work with the SGA to get students involved. Flyers
will be distributed to the campus as soon as we confirm Jonathan Algers
current position.
B. Mentoring M. Coleman Carter
The committee has not met since the holiday break. However, it continues
to support the work of the Recruitment and Retention Committee.
C. Recruitment and Retention Committee L. Rodriguez
The Committee met with the Latino (a) Caucus. The attendance was light.
L. Rodriguez is preparing a report on the findings. He also reported that
The committee continues to develop the on-line survey for the campus community
that will include questions about race, ethnicity, and gender.
He outlined the process for the survey as
1. Meet with caucuses and groups that serve as focus groups.
2. Share summary of meetings with respective caucuses and groups.
3. Create and send campuswide survey.
4. Tabulate results.
5. PCAA makes recommendations to President Cole base on the results.
6. Share the recommendations to President Cole with the caucuses and groups.
A lengthy discussion followed on whether to limit distribution of the
survey the caucuses and groups or everyone. J. Hain thought is was important
to receive feedback from the groups who are affected more directly. Another
opinion was to be inclusive of white males and other groups that are not
organized or don not have representation in the PCAA.
L. Rodriguez recommended that the Recruitment and Retention Committee
continue meeting with the caucuses and groups, but shorten the on-line
survey. The PCAA should reserve the decision to distribute the survey
to the entire campus until the committee meets with remaining groups on
the agenda and develops the final questions.
Another option was suggested to ask caucuses and groups to identify their
constituencies and send the on-line questionnaire to those who are identified.
T. Jacobowitz brought closure to the discussion by saying that we would
discuss this issue at a future meeting after the R&R committee
finished its round of group meetings.
III. Affirmative Action Day
T. Jacobowitz expressed disappointment in PCAA member attendance at
at Affirmative Action Day last year. Commission is expected to attend,
especially since the event is held during our regular meeting time. Since
students
are expected to be our largest audience, student diversity should be a
major topic. However, we might have Jonathan Alger address faculty about
recruitment and retention.
We can advertise Affirmative Action day as the 50th anniversary of Brown
vs. Board of Education and the 30th anniversary of the MSU Presidents
Commission on Affirmative Action.
C. Stochelski suggested that student groups display books and articles
about
affirmative action and diversity.
Another suggestion was to piggyback on the Century Project sponsored by
Dr. Skalsky for publicity purposes. The programs compliment each other.
T. Jacobowitz suggested that the Affirmative Action Day Committee meet
immediately after this meeting to develop a checklist for what needs to
be done.
J. Harris, M. Coleman Carter, L. Smith, C. Stochelski, T. Jacobowitz,
and B. Milton will also have a follow-up meeting on Tuesday, February
10 at 1:30 PM.
IV. Old Business
A. Recruitment of New Faculty D. Rogers
According to Glen Lang, Executive Director of Educational Opportunity
Fund at the Commission on Higher Education, the MAC Program has been suspended
due to lack of funding
B. Domestic Partnerships C. Meneghin
Gov. McGreevy signed the bill on domestic partnerships which will be in
effect on July 10. However, the law may be challenged in the courts. All
couples may register, but opposite gender couples must both be over 65
years old.
C. Meneghin asked for the PCAA to recommend that Human Resources conduct
information sessions on the domestic partnership law and all ramifications
in cooperation with FLFSA and the Unions. J. Hain agreed that this was
a human resources responsibility and as such will coordinate the sessions
on campus.
C. Co-sponsorship
The PCAA has agreed to cosponsor Djanna Hill talk on Is It Womanist Pedagogy?
On Wednesday, April 21 at 2:30 PM.
D. MSU Employment Data J. Hain
EO/AA data 2002-2003 highlights:
- MSU exceed NJ demographics for employees of color

- 47% of all new hires were POC
