Welcome
Chairperson C. Meneghin called the meeting to order at 1:07pm.
Minutes
Milton approved the May Advance Meeting L. Smith second the minutes. C. Lange approved the Sept. 20, 2006 minutes, L. Smith second minutes. The minutes were approved as submitted.
Discussion
The members discussed the Senate's statement on the Campus Climate for Civility and Human Dignity. Senate President Saundra Collins spoke with the Commission about the statement and the Senate's intent. The PCAA voted to support the statement. Any recommendations/comments about the document from members of the PCAA and/or their constituencies should be submitted to B. Milton.
Reading
J. Velasco facilitated a discussion regarding the reading: - A Community's Response to Hate: Reactions of a College Campus to Expressions of Homophobia and Heterosexism.
Affirmative Action Day Update
A. Update
D. Ragin reported Mr. Tim Wise the author of "White Like Me" will accept the invitation to speak at MSU regarding affirmative action from the perspective from someone who identifies as someone from a privilege class. The radio station WBAI supports him and tapes his lectures around the country and will encourage the turn out at MSU. C. Meneghin discussed that the PCAA has the support of Jed Wheller for 2008. He will be contracting Sweet Honey and Rock as part of the programming and tag onto Affirmative Action Day. Members were asked to brainstorm year long programming of events, lectures/speakers to be tagged onto the celebration of supportive of affirmative action. Members were asked to form an ad-hoc group for an award for faculty, staff, students who have supportive equality.
Committee Reports
A. Recruitment and retention
Reported to be working on six issues.
analyzing the latest Montclair workforce report
the faculty 2 for 1 option that had been offered in the past
reviewing the search committee procedures from a faculty perspective and administrative perspective
B. Mentoring
Reported to be analyzing the questionnaire. The committee agreed to push back the time table in order to put the roll out in-sync with affirmative action day and to share some of the findings with individuals and members of the community to do the survey there if they have not participated. Next meeting they will break down individual tasks and work towards securing lab space for the survey for easy access for everyone. The survey will be in English and Spanish ... no paper survey. Closure at end February.
C. Education Reported the committee will be leading the planning on the conversations on affirmative action. The first one is scheduled for Monday November 13.
Other Business
A. Transportation/Parking for People with Disabilities
Reported that the Executive committee met with Tim Carrey and Effrin (who is now temporary in charge of the shuttle) regarding parking and transportation. J. Hain will have a meeting with the New Associate VP for Facilities and Management. The committee also discussed the issue of parking regarding people who visit the campus, are not well informed about where to park.
B. C. Meneghin read a thank you letter from Luis Rodriguez and adjourned that meeting at 2:57 pm. The next meeting is scheduled for November 15, 2006.
