•  Call to Order

A.   Welcome
Chairperson C. Meneghin called the meeting to order at 1:03pm.

•  Minutes
G. Balestracci approved the October minutes, J. Harris second the minutes.   The minutes were approved as submitted.

•  Agenda
The activity Raising Awareness will be implemented instead of Old Business.  

•  Update

L. Smith reported; a student wrote to President Cole regarding issues of accessibility to buildings for students with disabilities. Mr. Bressler (new assoc VP Facility) and Dr. Pennington met with him to have doors taken fixed. L. Smith will check up and follow up.  

•  Reading/Raising Awareness
Onore led the discussion for November's reading of White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh.  

A new agenda item has been added to the monthly meetings:   Raising Awareness.   In coordination with our reading discussing, the Commission will focus on our own education as a group and as individuals.   These discussions will enhance our own understand of issues which affect affirmative action, diversity and equal opportunity.   Our first discussion involved trigger words.   The Commission will work on developing a 'living' document or educational tool in part through the information brought to these discussion, which will be shared with the University community in the future.  

• New Business
The Issue of civility was discussed with regards to using email as a form of communication.   Discussion included how people may use email as a cloak of invisibility - for example; using email to say things that they wouldn't say in person going a step further using email massively.   As a result the group expressed the need to research and address protocols as it relates to email in conjunction with the ACC committee of the Senate.

•  Announcement
Lorenzo updated the committee regarding affirmative action day - there is no contract yet, with Tim Wise however no problems are anticipated for Feb. 7 th .

Meeting was adjourned by D. Davis at 2:58pm. The next meeting is scheduled for December 20, 2006.
