The committee met with students and its focus was Affirmative Action Day

To bolster student participation at PCAA meetings, Robert Davis was appointed

The Education Committee will also consider best practices in diversity
hiring.
The committee is waiting for the MSU Affirmative Action Report for analysis.
PCAA also is interested in how data will distributed to it and to the
Caucuses in the future. L. Rodriguez added that from the meetings held
with caucuses and groups held thus far, the University needs to produce
affirmative action data so we can work with data and not impressions.
J. Harris also announced that the New Jersey minority and female set asides
are now illegal. Small business is the only protected class at a time
when there is $15B in NJ school construction available for contracts.

Committee with the women's group. The women were responsive to the
mentoring questions and provided feedback on how the mentoring program
might be structured. They also and recommended mentors.
J. Ficke presented a summary of the New Faculty Mentor Program to the
committee. Initiated in 1994, the program has a director Dr. Luis Montesinos.
Each new faculty member is assigned to a faculty mentor who supports and
provides resources. There is also a peer-mentoring component with the
program.
The committee will also continue assessment of other mentoring programs

The next Mentoring Committee meeting will be in January.
C. Recruitment and Retention L. Rodriguez
The R&R Committee met with the Senate Committee on Persons with
Disabilities. The meeting focused on accessibility, attitudes toward
students and employees with disabilities. Spring 2004 plans include:

- meeting again with the women's group.
The Commission was also introduced to the new president of the Asian Pacific
Islanders Caucus, Chandana Chakraborty.
L. Rodriguez indicated that PCAA, via the R&R Committee, might consider
distributing the survey that the caucuses receive(d) campuswide. Of course
we would have to provide the same type of information as to why the PCAA
was collecting the data and it will be used and reported.
