Deborah Gaines is responsible for the coordination and management of all aspects of Montclair State's integrated marketing and communications office, directly supporting the University’s mission and strategic goals. She leads a 21-member team of marketing, advertising, Web services, graphic design, media relations and editorial professionals.

A graduate of Yale (BA) and Columbia (MA) Universities, Ms. Gaines started her career as a journalist. Her writing has been featured in leading publications ranging from Money and The New Yorker to Redbook, Ladies’ Home Journal and Huffington Post.

Ms. Gaines also served as managing editor for Hearst New Media and, and as co-founder/editorial director of the Downtown Magazine Group, a collection of twelve bimonthly, custom magazines targeting suburban communities. After making the switch from journalism to marketing, she held the position of communications manager for the New York Convention & Visitors Bureau as well as chief marketing officer for a leading international law firm.

Deborah Gaines regularly coaches professional staff to improve their business writing skills, both one-on-one and in group settings. She has co-taught writing courses at Pratt Institute, Fordham College, Seton Hall University and the United Nations, where she lectured at the Forum for International Journalists.
