Asha Ganpat is a Trinidadian-American conceptual visual artist, born in Trinidad of the West Indies. Ganpat works in a wide range of traditional and non-traditional media including paper, lace, metal, gold, light and sound. She has received awards and notoriety for her installations and interactive works. Her work was cited as one of NYC’s top 10 art installations of 2012 by Complex Magazine. That work was also included in the scholarly volume A Companion to Public Art. In early 2018, Ganpat installed a new and permanent interactive sound sculpture commissioned for the Wildflower Sculpture Park of the South Mountain Reservation in Millburn, NJ.
In 2017, Ganpat was invited to speak at the Asia Society on the keynote panel of the South Asian American symposium sponsored by the Smithsonian entitled "Fatal Love: Where Are We Now?". She represented one of two artists representing both Indian and Caribbean diaspora. Ganpat has shown at institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Exit Art, The Noyes Museum, The Queens Museum, The Jersey City Museum and the Nathan Cummings Foundation. She is an alumnus of Aljira's Emerge, Gaia’s Wonderwomen, the New Jersey Book Art Symposium, Chashama North, Chashama Matawan, and Trinidad's Alice Yard residency. Ganpat is a professor at Montclair State University, an independent curator, and co-founded Red Saw Gallery of Newark, NJ 2005 - 2008.
