Curriculum Action Dates, 2011-12

I. New programs and program alterations become effective in the Fall semester only.

  • A. New programs approved in the course of the academic year (September 1 through June 30) become effective at the beginning of the subsequent academic year. New concentrations within an existing major or minor follow the schedule for program alterations (see B., below).
    • B. Program alterations must be approved by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost/VPAA) in early January to become effective at the beginning of the subsequent academic year.  This means program alterations must be approved through all committee levels by November 30 of the academic year prior to which they become effective.

    II. New courses and course alterations may become effective for the Summer/Fall or Spring semesters. All new courses and course alterations must be circulated throughout the University academic community for a one-month period prior to review for approval by the Provost/VPAA and subsequent circulation on an approval list.  All new courses and course alterations must be approved through all committee levels and appropriate College/School deans before delivery to the Office of the Provost for circulation.  The lists are circulated by the Office of the Registrar, via the Blackboard Community "Courses and Curricular Actions", at the beginning of each month.  The approval lists are also circulated by the Office of the Registrar,  via the Blackboard Community "Courses and Curricular Actions",  at the beginning of each month.

Department Assessment Committees

  • September 9, 2011 VPAA notifies deans of tenured faculty to be assessed.
  • September 26, 2011 Deans notify department chairpersons of faculty to be assessed.
  • December 1, 2011 Election of departmental assessment committees.
  • February 2, 2012 Self-assessment statements submitted to departmental assessment committees, department chairperson, and the College/School dean.
  • February 16, 2012 Final report of departmental assessment committees submitted to VPAA.
  • March 2, 2012 Deadline for submission to VPAA of written response to the departmental assessment committees' report by assessed faculty members, if desired.

Application for Doctoral Faculty in a Doctoral Program

  • April 1, 2012 Application due to Doctoral Program Coordinator of the doctoral program in which the faculty member will hold the appointment and the faculty member's home department.

  • October 3, 2011 VPAA notifies deans of departments needing elections for department chairperson.
  • November 11, 2011 Dean notifies departments regarding need for  election of department chairperson.
  • April 10, 2012 Election of department chairpersons completed and  results reported to deans.

  • Summer 2011 Department begins preparing self-study.
  • September 23, 2011 Five-Year External Review Committee nominations (4-6 names) due to Dean from Chair.
  • October 17, 2011 Five-Year External Review Committee nominations (4-6 names) due to Provost from Dean.
  • November 7, 2011 Five-Year External Review Committee nominations approved by Provost and communicated to Dean.
  • November 11, 2011 Dean or designee verbally notifies Five-Year External Review Committee members of selection and indicates formal letter of invitation to follow from Provost.
  • December 5, 2011 Written confirmation of Five-Year External Review Committee participants sent to team members by Provost
  • Three weeks before team visit- Chair sends self-study material to Five-Year External Review Committee (copy to Provost, Graduate School Dean, and Library Dean).
  • February, March, and April 2012 All Five-Year External Review Committee visits completed.
  • May 31, 2012 Five-Year External Review Committee reports due to Dean and Department Chair (with copy to Provost).

  • Month of October 2012 Provost meets with Dean and Chair to discuss Five-Year External Review Committee report and ongoing plans for Department improvement.

Mid-Term Evaluation of Department Chairperson

  • October 3, 2011 VPAA notifies deans of departments needing  mid-term evaluation of department chairperson.
  • November 11, 2011 Dean notifies Department PAC of need for mid-term evaluation of department chairperson.
  • January 20, 2012 Department DPAC recommendation to Dean
  • February 3, 2012 Recommendation from dean to VPAA on mid-term evaluation of department chairperson.
