The Center for Academic Development and Assessment (CADA) offers Tutorial Services, Learning Competencies Workshops, Supplemental Instruction, and learning support to Montclair students in collaboration with academic and administrative departments, as well as the Assessment of freshmen and some transfer students for course placement.
The Center for Academic Development and Assessment provides tutoring and academic support services to Montclair State University students. The tutoring is offered in most academic areas by the master and peer tutors who have excelled in their particular subject areas and have been recommended by the faculty. CADA tutors receive training on study skills and successful tutoring techniques to best assist students. The Center, certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), awards trained tutors with the CRLA certifications for levels 1, 2 and 3.
Additionally, the Center offers a variety of workshops on effective study strategies and active learning. Students are encouraged to stop by and learn how CADA can assist them in enhancing their academic performance through the application of effective study skills, active listening and learning styles, memory and test taking strategies, writing a research paper, and managing test anxiety, among the others.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is offered by CADA as a learning support program designed to help students master the difficult course content through the development and implementation of active learning strategies. CADA organizes scheduled out of the classroom weekly SI sessions with trained SI leaders to work with Montclair students from the selected courses. The SI sessions are open to any student in the course.
CADA coordinates all assessment and evaluation procedures associated with placement testing; students are placed into appropriate courses in English and mathematics after a review of their academic records. All students must demonstrate proficiencies in writing, reading and elementary algebra, which are compatible with the successful performance of college level work. The Montclair State University Placement Requirement provides for the demonstration of such proficiencies through SAT scores, achievement in high school courses, or the assessment of these skills upon entry to the University and, if necessary, enrollment in particular remedial or developmental courses to develop requisite skills. Montclair State University administers the ACCUPLACER for a placement test in reading and mathematics. The Center also provides support to the College of Science and Mathematics (CSAM) in its Math Readiness Testing (MRT) program.
