Attendance Policy for Title IV Financial Aid Recipients

The Department of Education, operating under new guidelines, has now mandated that we establish a withdrawal date for all students who withdraw unofficially from the University.  Typically, these are students who stop attending classes during the course of a semester without using the official withdrawal process.  They are identifiable as those students whose grade reports show a mixture of "F," "WD" and "IN" grades.

We are required to determine a last date of attendance (LDA) within 30 days of the end of a term.  This information will then be used to determine whether a Title IV financial aid recipient must provide a refund, and if so, the magnitude of the refund. Failure to conform to these regulations will jeopardize our ability to continue in the Title IV program.  Since this program provides approximately $15M in aid for our students, it is clear that non-conformance would be a major blow to both our students and the institution.

With your help, we can conform to the DoE regulations and assure that Title IV resources will continue to be available to our students.  You will be notified after grades are posted each semester, if we believe that a student in one of your classes may have unofficially withdrawn prior to the end of that semester. We will ask that you help us determine a LDA for this student by identifying the student?s last attendance at an event that you monitored-for example: exams, quizzes, assignment submissions, attendance records, tutorials, counseling/advisement sessions. This request will come from the Financial Aid Office and must be returned to that office within two weeks.
