UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Montclair State Universitys Great Events Series will present a concert featuring Newband performing works composed by famed musical innovator Harry Partch in the Universitys Memorial Auditorium Sunday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m.
The program will include Partchs Two Studies on Ancient Greek Scales; O Frabjous Day; The Letter; Ring Around the Moon; Castor and Pollux; Dean Drummonds The Day the Sun Stood Still; and the first performance of Donald Stevens ô, to make dreames true.
Musicians participating in the performance include: Robert Osborne: bass-baritone; Dean Drummond: adapted guitar, kithara, surrogate kithara, harmonic canon; conductor Stefani Starin: flute, adapted guitar, surrogate kithara; Michael Lipsey: kithara, bass marimba; Bill Ruyle: diamond marimba, bass marimba; Tom Kolor: harmonic canons, bass marimba; Thomas DiGiovanni: chromelodeon, synthesizer; Jeffrey Kraus: bass marimba, cloud chamber bowls, zoomoozophone; Gregory Beyer: harmonic canon, bamboo marimba, cloud chamber bowls, zoomoozophone, juststrokerods; and Caroline Stinson: cello.
Newband, a music ensemble that has performed in major venues throughout the world, has been artist ensemble in residence, with the Harry Partch Instrumentarium, at MSU since 1999. An academic program for students was inaugurated in 2000 and quickly caught on with a growing group of dedicated students. Newband Co-director Drummond is professor of Music at MSU and plans are in place for a degree program in Harry Partch Studies, a first in the world of music education.
