Gov. McGreevey to speak at PharmFest at MSU March 28

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey will be the principal speaker at PharmFest -- a day of activities centered on the pharmaceutical industry -- to be held at Montclair State University’s Memorial Auditorium on March 28 starting at 9 a.m. PharmFest, which is free and open to the public (excluding lunch which is at capacity), will allow attendees to hear about the future of the pharmaceutical world and network with top executives and industry representatives.

“The pharmaceutical industry in New Jersey continues to thrive,” said Dr. Susan A. Cole, president of Montclair State University, “PharmFest, an idea jointly developed by Montclair State University and the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey, is designed to provide an intensive introduction to the pharmaceutical industry in New Jersey to hundreds of university and high school students in the region. It will also provide an opportunity for University faculty and industry executives to discuss opportunities for collaboration.

“We are pleased that Gov. McGreevey will add his voice to the day’s dialogue,” she continued. “His participation in PharmFest highlights the importance he has placed on creative interactions between higher education and industry for New Jersey’s well-being.”

Bob Franks, president of HealthCare Institute of New Jersey and a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, will deliver the Keynote Address.

Experts in the field will speak on the future of the industry; on research, development and marketing topics; and on career opportunities.

Also planned are:

**Roundtable discussions and workshops on select topics, led by MSU faculty and MSU industry leaders.

**A panel presentation and discussion -- with a question-and-answer period -- with leaders in research, development and marketing in the New Jersey pharmaceutical world.

**A career fair with representatives of the major pharmaceutical agencies in New Jersey.

**A seminar by Dr. Barbara Brummer, MSU graduate and World Wide Vice President for Women’s Health at Johnson & Johnson.

**An afternoon session on MSU’s evolving Science Informatics Program with Dr. A. Baxevanis, director of Computational Genomics at the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

“PharmFest will offer participants insight into where the field is and where it is heading,” said Dr. Robert Prezant, dean of the College and Science and Mathematics. “Well over half of the positions for the future of the industry are in non-research areas. PharmFest is designed to offer information and perspectives on all avenues of the industry, from science to sales.”

Members of the public are welcome at all events. For additional information, or to register, please call (973) 655-5108 or e-mail petersonra@mail.montclair.edu.

PharmFest is sponsored by MSU’s College of Science and Mathematics, the School of Business and the Career Development Center, in cooperation with the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey and New Jersey’s pharmaceutical and medical technology industry.

MSU is New Jersey’s second largest university. It offers the advantages of a large university -- a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum with a global focus, a broad variety of superior graduate programs, and a diverse faculty and student body -- combined with a small college’s attention to students.

More information on the University is available on its website: www.montclair.edu.

MSU is located at the intersection of Valley Road and Normal Avenue in Upper Montclair. The campus is one mile south of the junction of routes 3 and 46, 14 miles west of New York City.
