Wrestling and men's basketball bring home championships
The wrestling team, under head coach Steve Strellner, posted its 13th top finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships, placing third in the tournament held at Ohio Northern University on March 3-4. Wrestlers Florian Ghinea and Dominic Dellagatta each captured individual national titles at 141 and 165 pounds, respectively. The pair also earned All-American honors along with sophomore Rami Ratel and freshman Brad Christie. The men's basketball team captured its first Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Championship with a 78-75 victory over top-seeded Richard Stockton on March 5.

Senior guard Mike Bult was named the ECAC Tournament Most Valuable Player for his 70-foot shot at the buzzer that tied the score at 67-67, sending the game into overtime. Bult then went on to score seven points and MSU captured the game and the ECAC crown. Senior guard B.J. Reilly, who played his last game for Montclair State, scored a team-high 21 points. He completed his career with 1,027 points, placing him 17th on the all-time Montclair scoring list.

Students learn about careers teaching English
Students interested in teaching English had the opportunity to learn more about the field during a recent information session sponsored by the English Department and MINTCO (Minority Teacher Candidates' Organization). Sara Jonsberg, coordinator of the English Education Program; Jocelyn Santana, associate coordinator; Jennifer Robinson, director of the Teacher Education Advocacy Center; and student Suzanne Snyder, who is in the teaching program, talked about the program and answered students' questions. About 15 students attended the session.

"I think it went really well, especially with Suzanne being the main voice rather than faculty lecturing or presenting ideas about the program," Santana said. "We wanted the students to hear another student's voice. That's one of the things we believe in. As teachers we want to make sure each student's voice is heard."

Snyder said she always wanted to work with children, but wasn't sure if teaching was the way. "When I realized how well I worked with kids, and got involved through local tutoring, writing and teaching programs as a result of the English Education Information Session I attended four years ago, I knew I was headed in the right direction," she said. There are roughly 120 students enrolled in the English Education Program. "Our students will be prepared to take transformative roles in public education," Jonsberg said, "leading their students to being lifelong readers, writers and thinkers."
