CAST takes a holistic approach to promoting learning and success by providing programs that address students’ academic, personal, and social development. The CAST staff advises all freshmen, undeclared sophomores, and veteran and military students. The department offers many initiatives to monitor their progress and to foster a strong connection between the students’ interests and their fields of study. These efforts include:

- New Student Seminar
- Peer Leadership Program
- Step-Up Program
- Student Academic Progress Program (SAPP)
CAST also recognizes and encourages the success of freshmen and sophomores through its support and advisement of:
- Alpha Lambda Delta, the First-Year Honor Society.
- National Society for Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an honor society for high-achieving freshman and sophomore students.
