Peer Mentor Program

Mission Statement:

    The mission of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Center’s Peer Mentor Program at Montclair State University is to guide, connect, support, and engage underclassmen and transfer students with upperclassmen Peer Educators who provide a trusting, confidential, one-on-one relationship and space for mentees to explore any issues that arise, including their sexual orientation and/or gender identity, in a safe, non-judgmental, supportive, and empowering environment. Through this relationship, mentees are connected with campus resources, engaged in on- and off-campus activities, and develop an enhanced sense of belonging and connection to campus while increasing student involvement, confidence, and retention.

    Goals of the Program:

    1. Provide support and guidance to underclassmen and transfer students
    2. Connect and engage underclassmen with campus resources and campus activities
    3. Empower students through education, friendship, and mentorship
    4. Promote campus involvement and social interaction
    5. To increase underclassmen involvement, retention, and confidence
    6. Provide leadership opportunities that will serve the campus community
    7. To assist in the development of positive LGBTQ identities

    The Program Does Not Provide:

    • Counseling/therapy services
    • Dating services
    • Personal services (tutoring, note-taking, running errands, etc.)
