
It is important for students to develop personal skills and obtain valuable work experience that will assist their growth as leaders and as people. The Office of Student Leadership Programs has compiled the following list of campus student leadership employment opportunities. These positions provide training, part time hours, flexibility with classes, growth opportunites, and, of course, invaluable experience. Students who work on campus have demonstrated that they are likely to become more successful in college and after graduation when compared to those who do not.
Ambassadors are student representatives for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. They are from all over the world, have majors representing every college and school, and are involved in University activities including the Student Government Association, Players, Intervarsity, A.S.S.I.S.T., and many others. Nearly half of the students are also part of the University's Honors Program. The connections the Ambassadors are able to make with each other, and with faculty and administrators all over the campus enhance their experience at Montclair State University and help the University by inspiring future students to become a part of MSU.

Peer Leaders
First Year Peer Leader
The college environment provides many opportunities for students to enhance their academic and personal growth. First Year Peer Leaders expand these opportunities by providing competent peer assistance during New Student Orientation and new students’ first semester at MSU. In addition to New Student Orientation, Peer Leaders work with various programs designed to facilitate a positive transition for all first year students. Peer Leaders are undergraduate students who possess leadership qualities and who are interested in working with a diverse population of first-year and transfer students.

Residential Education and Services
Community Assistants
Community Assistants (CA's) are student staff members of the Office of Residential Education and Services under the supervision of a Community Director. They provide residents with services such as counseling and programming, and serve as resources. CA's must possess time management and organizational skills, as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills. As peer leaders, they are expected to be positive role models for residents, staff, and the Montclair State University community. All applicants must have a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 or above and must be in good standing with the Office of Residential Education and Services.
Facilities Assistants
The Facilities Assistant (FA) is a staff member of the Office of Residential Education and Services. It is the responsibility of the FA to assist with a wide range of responsibilities focusing on housing operations and residential maintenance. The FA is expected to act as a representative of the department and to utilize proper service etiquette when addressing the needs of all residents, staff members, and guests within the MSU Campus Community. The Facilities Assistant position is approximately a 20 hour per week commitment.
Service Assistants
The Service Assistant (SA) is a staff member of the Office of Residential Education and Services. It is the responsibility of the SA to ensure an enthusiastic, inclusive, safe and welcoming environment for all residents and guests of the assigned community. The SA’s are responsible for ensuring a secure community, by allowing only residents and properly signed in guests’ community building access. The SA is expected to act as a representative of the department and to utilize proper service etiquette when addressing the needs of all residents, staff members, and guests within the MSU Campus Community.
Academic Assistants
The Academic Assistant position is approximately a 20 hour per week commitment. The Academic Assistant is an undergraduate, staff member of the Office of Residential Education and Services. It is the responsibility of the Academic Assistant to ensure and encourage academic success within the designated residential community. Academic Assistants work to support resident students by providing academic success mentoring, an in-hall curriculum, participation in community based activities, engaging students in campus life, connecting students to academic departments, and supporting the overall mission of the Department of Residential Education and Services. The Academic Assistant is expected to serve as a representative of the department and to utilize proper service etiquette when addressing the needs of all residents, staff members, and guests within the MSU Campus Community.
Service Assistant Coordinator
The Service Assistant Coordinator (SAC) is a staff member of the Office of Residential Education and Services. It is the responsibility of the SAC to ensure a Service Assistant Staff committed to creating an enthusiastic, inclusive, safe and welcoming environment for all residents and guests of the assigned community. The SACs are responsible for ensuring a secure community, by allowing only residents and properly signed in guests community building access. The SAC is expected to act as a representative of the department and to utilize proper service etiquette when addressing the needs of all residents, staff members, and guests within the MSU Campus Community.

Information Desk/Program Coordinator/Assistant Program Coordinator
These student staff members have direct responsibility for the Student Center Information Desk. Major duties also include set up, break down, and monitoring of media equipment used in the Student Center. The Program Coordinator and Assistant Program Coordinator assist clients with program/events implementation. Other tasks involved with these positions include greeting visitors, answering questions and giving directions.

Campus Recreation
Campus Recreation offers a number of student staff leadership employment opportunities. Students begin as a Fitness Attendant, Intramural Official, Lifeguard, Group Xercise Instructor or Office Assistant. After holding one of these positions and/or gaining experience as an executive member of RecBoard, they are then eligible for the following positions.
Building Manager – PROMOTED POSITION
Building Managers are individuals who have shown dedication to the Department of Campus Recreation and a desire to grow with us. These positions are directly responsible for all activity in the Student Recreation Center during their shifts, including but not limited to, the first and second floor fitness areas, the natatorium, the gymnasiums, the elevated track, lounge areas, the racquetball courts and both multipurpose activity rooms. In this position one is to know of all goings on within the building. Conflict resolution and emergency response are critical for this position.
Intramural Director – PROMOTED POSITION
This position organizes and administers an Intramural Sport, including overseeing marketing, scheduling of teams and game operations. Besides being present at each game one must also be available to do office work.
Intramural Area Supervisor – PROMOTED POSITION
This position is responsible for organizing directors and referees, hiring new employees, handling any discipline problems which may arise within the staff, running entry meetings and also be able to help to grow the program by bringing in new participants and including more of the campus community by providing new sports and activities.
Aquatics Area Supervisor – PROMOTED POSITION
In addition to serving as a Lifeguard, this position assists the Coordinator of Aquatics with scheduling and managing all lifeguards. In addition to being Lifeguard certified, the individual is asked to obtain Lifeguard Instructor certification in order to train new lifeguards.
Group Xercise Area Supervisor – PROMOTED POSITION
In addition to leading and instructing classes, this position assists the Fitness Coordinator in scheduling and managing all Group X instructors. This position is also responsible for training new instructors.
Area Supervisor of Building Managers – PROMOTED POSITION
This position is responsible for directly overseeing all Building Managers. This individual must show exceptional leadership skills. As Area Supervisor of Building Managers one must schedule all Building Managers, train them and promote any outstanding employees who they believe will be an asset to the department.
Area Supervisor of Facilities – PROMOTED POSITION
This individual will work to ensure that our facilities are sufficiently staffed and that the employees are properly trained. Duties include, hiring, training, scheduling and handling any disciplinary issues that may be arise.

Peer Advocate
Peer Advocacy at the Drop In Center is a major component of Health Promotion. Peer Advocates are student volunteers who have been trained to provide peer education, referral and health advocacy services to other students. Our volunteers bring a first-hand perspective to current health and social issues. Peer Advocates help develop and implement new initiatives in order to execute prorams they recognize as critical to the campus and to help others foster healthy lifestyle choices. They promote social change on campus by providing workshops, discussion groups, information and materials, and someone to talk to about health and social issues. Their actions are all in an effort to create an actively healthy change for the campus community. Peer Advocates are an energetic and diverse group of students who are committed to making a difference for the campus community.

Student Assistant
This student worker experience focuses on health promotion and provides an opportunity to function as a community health educator for the campus community. Responsibilities include:
1. Investigating campus health needs.
2. Presenting health promotion interventions in a variety of settings.
3. Evaluating health promotion programs and suggesting changes and recommendations for future programs.

MSU Emergency Medical Services offers leadership experiences to students who have an interest in serving those in need. By becoming trained as Emergency Medical Techncicians (EMTs), students receive comprehensive training that prepares them for responding as a team to medical emergencies that occur on campus and in the surrounding communities. There are many different ways to participate, ranging from volunteering for daytime hours, to the Resident Emergency Medical Tecnician program.
