Office of Extended Learning
The Office of Extended Learning and Special Academic Programs oversees the operation of Summer Sessions, Winter Session, and online programs and credit/non-credit certificate programs. Summer and Winter Sessions provide opportunities for students to utilize the summer and winter "breaks" to continue their pursuit of their undergraduate or graduate studies. To stay on track, Montclair State students, visiting students currently enrolled at other colleges and universities, and students who are accepted to begin their college or university studies for the subsequent fall semester are encouraged to pursue their studies during winter and summer.
Face to face, online, and hybrid undergraduate and graduate credit courses are offered from May to August in the arts, business, computer science, education, human services, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences. Courses are intense, comprehensive, and regardless of session, they all meet the same academic rigor and hours requirements as those offered during the fall and spring semesters.
Summer Sessions begins in mid-May with a three-week session, three four-week sessions, two six-week sessions, an eight-week session, and a twelve week session, followed by a three-week post-session in August. Courses are also offered on ten Saturdays within the twelve-week session. Daytime classes generally meet Monday through Thursday while evening classes meet on a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule.
Montclair State's Winter Session offers students the opportunity to take online or hybrid courses and earn up to four credits during the four-week Winter Session that runs between the fall and spring semesters. Students commence their studies online in December and begin the face-face component of the hybrid courses the first week in January. Courses are intense and comprehensive and they all meet the same academic rigor and hours requirements as those offered during the fall and spring semesters.
