ITALIAN TRANSLATION FOR TOURISM AND CULTURAL PROMOTION

Take this course from anywhere. Now with an online section!

Start your journey through this course with a brief  history of tourism and travel literature by Italian writers and about Italy. Watch and analyze films for their varied representations of Italy. Read and analyze texts on cultural marketing and hospitality management, identifying the strategies by which cultural sites and products are marketed to the world as part of the Made in Italy brand.

Embark on an introduction to the basic theories and principles of translation, a contrastive analysis of the Italian and English languages, and key translation strategies for the Italian-English language pairing. Hone your skills in Italian and English to translate the most common texts for the tourist, hospitality and cultural sectors, such as historical texts, brochures, travel guides, texts for museum exhibits, theatrical and musical events, advertisements, commercials, videos, websites and social media. Gain an initial understanding of fundamental aspects of interpreting and accessibility to media.

Key stops along our way will be workshops by top experts on CAT tools offered through the Center for Translation and Interpreting, and on Italian translation for business and interpreting offered through the support of the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies.

The official dates of the course are: 9/7/16 – 12/22/16
Face-to-face instruction: Tuesdays and Thursdays 1 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.
