Media Relations Policies

University Communications is the only official source of University information and is solely authorized to distribute press releases and other press information to outside media. Media Relations initiates and/or responds to media requests and manages those interactions. All media queries to individuals or departments should immediately be referred to Media Relations.

Off-site

Individuals who have sanctioned relationships with press contacts or are presenting at or attending academic meetings or conferences off-site are permitted to respond to media queries if they deem it appropriate. However, all comments to the media should be made with the expectation that they will be interpreted as the position of Montclair State University; therefore it is important not to offer comments that could be controversial, defamatory, or litigious in nature.

Individuals must notify University Communications of all media interactions and provide the name of the reporter and media outlet they represent.

Media on Campus

While on Montclair State property, including academic buildings, research centers, residence halls, or any other secure location, media representatives should be accompanied by a staff member from or an employee designated by University Communications.

Promotional Opportunities

All requests to appear in advertising or programming that involves professional associations, businesses, or non-profit organizations should be reported to University Communications for prior approval before any commitments are made. In addition, approvals pursuant to applicable policies or procedures must be obtained prior to accepting monetary remuneration for such activities.
