Tools

Web Services develops tools for use within University Web sites to provide efficient services to our audiences and assist in the management of data. Pre-planning your site's functionality is very important. Before adding any interactively or features to your Web site discuss the plan and issues with Web Services. Some of the tools already developed by Web Services and available for use in Montclair State Web pages include:

Please contact Cindy Meneghin if you have any questions about any of the following tools and services supported by Web Services.

News System

The University News System is a database driven service that, through University NetID login, administrators can produce news articles which can then be published on any of the established University News Channels on a vast variety of University Web pages. News articles can consist of descriptions formatted through the News System, including the ability to add images and links to other Web pages. News articles also can have Media Sets attached to them. Media Sets can include a 'slide show' of images, and/or video or audio clips. Images and/or audio or video clips must be prepared prior to constructing a Media Set. Administrators access the News System through a Web-page login. If you have any questions about establishing a News Channel for your Web page please contact Web Services.

Campus Map

The Campus map provides an interactive service for audiences to view information related to each building and major location on campus. The descriptions include the closest parking available, 360 degree views (if available) and links to Web sites related to the location. It also provides graphical description on how to travel from one location to another, on campus. These graphical descriptions can be provided as links within Web pages or e-mail messages announcing events at a specific location. An example would be to guide your audience to park in the Red Hawk Deck and walk to your meeting to be held in the Conference Center in University Hall.

University Events Calendar

The University Events Calendar displays campus events which are open to the campus community or beyond. Administrators are assigned permissions to publish information about their events which can include text, images and links to related Web pages. This is a data-base driven system which also allows for connection to the Campus Map. Once you choose a location for your event, the event display provides an image of the location which is a link to the Campus Map. Submissions can be single events or multiple events for a single day. For example: if you have an conference on January 31, but it has several events related to the conference, your calendar event can be constructed to view the event for the single day, but list the sub-events within it. The Events Calendar can be searched by day/month/year, as well as by selected sub-catagories such as Academics, Arts, Athletics, Lectures, Open to the Public.

University Catalog

The University Catalog, also a data-base driven service, provides the curriculum information for each undergraduate and graduate program of study. Additional college/department/program description information also is provided. Audiences may view information by college/school, by alpha listing or by alpha department listing. The curriculum information includes requirements and individual course descriptions. This information also can be dynamically displayed on any department Web page. Code is inserted into a department's Web page so specifically chosen curriculum information, from the University Catalog, automatically displays on the page. When/if that curriculum information is updated on the University Catalog it also will update on the department's Web page. The University Catalog is updated annually.

Faculty and Staff Profile Pages

The Faculty and Staff Profile Pages allow Montclair State employees a Web-based interface tool to provide uniform and specialized information about themselves. The uniform information (campus location, phone number, e-mail address, etc) is provided via the Human Resources database. The specialized information (brief personal description, an image, descriptive information related to specializations or research projects, resume/CV, office hours, links to Web pages or to additional documents) can be added by the individual (or by assigned department personnel). The Faculty/Staff Profile pages are linked via the Campus Directory. Search for a person, via the Campus Directory, and their name will be a link to their Profile Page. Departments should be linking to their Profile Page links on Web pages listing faculty and staff members.

The Carpool Directory allows Montclair State students, faculty and staff to post their commuting information and seek out colleagues traveling similar routes who are interested in sharing a ride often or occasionally. Using their Montclair State NetID to sign-in, Montclair State faculty/staff/students post your information, then search to find fellow carpoolers. Faculty/staff directory is separate from the student directory.

Blogs

Montclair State University blogs contain information associated with academic and/or administrative work at the university. Comparatively, coursework information should be located on Blackboard and personal work should be hosted on OIT’s NetDrive.

In order to have a blog created, content must be sanctioned as academic or administrative work of the university. All information posted to the blog must be pertinent to the university.

Blogs are powered by Wordpress, which runs on a database and allows the user to easily post and categorize information associated with a club, center, or research. All Blogs that are set up by University Communications have the same layout and theme, but can be customized with additional widgets (such as external links, textual information, twitter feed, a calendar of posts or a listing of post categories).

Example of a blog:

If you would like a blog created, please contact Web Services.
