Over the last 100 years, Montclair State has consistently advanced while fulfilling its mission to provide distinguished and affordable higher education in New Jersey.
Established as the State Normal School at Montclair in 1908, we continue to proudly train New Jersey’s finest teachers — as well as many more, equally talented students across a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs.
The original two-year teaching college became a four-year BA degree granting institution in 1927, adding master’s programs in 1932. Rapid enrollment growth in the late forties and fifties led to an expanded curriculum and faculty; a merger with the Panzer School of Physical Education created Montclair State College in 1958.
Montclair State admitted its first liberal arts students in 1966 and then began to reorganize along a university model, with individual schools run by their own deans. The state designated Montclair State a University in 1994. Doctorates in audiology, environmental management and education (including the nation’s first doctorate in pedagogy) were added in different years.
The past decade has brought continued growth and development. MSU broadened its Mission Statement and Strategic Plan to guide us into our second century.
We emphasize interdisciplinary initiatives throughout our undergraduate and post-graduate curricula. Our 465 full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty members have outstanding research and program-planning expertise.
Today’s University includes close to 17,000 students, more than 3,200 of them residents, all learning and connecting via the latest technologies. Our main 246-acre campus boasts state-of-the-art recreational, performance and exhibition facilities. MSU also has 240 acres at the New Jersey School of Conservation in Stokes State Forest.
We are well on track to complete an ambitious expansion plan that will enable MSU to serve 18,000 students by 2008, our Centennial year. MSU will continue to provide students an excellent education. |
