Guidelines for Obtaining Credit for College Writing I:

Students may receive 3 credits for College Writing I: Intellectual Prose through one of two means: 

Score 4 or higher on the ETS Advanced Placement Examination in English Language and Composition.

Score 50 or higher on the ETS College Level Examination Program (CLEP) General Examination in English Composition with essay.  (Students must first qualify to take College Writing I by achieving the appropriate score on the Montclair State University Placement Test.)  The CLEP exam must be taken prior to completion of the student's first semester of undergraduate work.

Additional Guidelines for Obtaining Credit for College Writing II:

Students may receive 3 credits for College Writing II: Writing and Literary Study through one of two means:

Score 4 or higher on the ETS Advanced Placement Examination in English Literature and Composition.

Score 50 or higher on the ETS College Level Examination Program (CLEP) General Examination in Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, with essay.  (Students must first qualify to take College Writing I by achieving the appropriate score on the Montclair State University Placement Test.)  The CLEP exam must be taken prior to completion of the student's first semester of undergraduate work.

Note: Processing of AP waivers will be handled through the Admissions Office.  If eligible students do not receive credit by their second semester of enrollment, they should contact the Phyllis Brooks of the English Department (Dickson 468).
