2009 Winner: Luke Bakula, "Do Unto Others." Paper for ENWR105.
The Second Annual Exemplary College Writing Awards recognize outstanding first-year essays written in ENWR 100, 105 and 106. We invite submissions that span the range of writing assignments from all three courses with one award being given in each of the three categories. Students may submit only one essay. The Program awards the prizes at the end of each spring semester for essays written during the academic year (i.e. Summer 2009 through Spring 2010). Students do not need their professor’s recommendation to submit an essay, though faculty consultation is permissible and may be appropriate.
Applicants must submit essays by Mon., December 21, 2009 for Summer and Fall semester submissions, and Wed., April 21, 2010 for Spring semester submissions.
Students whose essays are selected will be asked to supply an electronic copy in Word via email. Winning students may also be asked to work through an editing process. After final editorial approval, winners will receive a $100 MSU award, publication of the essay on the FYWP website, and an invitation to the English Department’s Award Ceremony.
To submit your essay, attach the completed application on the bottom of this form to a hard copy of your essay and bring it to the English Department, DI 468, by the deadline. All essays must be typed and free of written comments or grades. The name of the student and his/her instructor shouldnot appear on the essay itself. For essays that include secondary sources, include a properly formatted, complete Works Cited list in MLA documentation format. Essays that do not conform to MLA documentation criteria will not be accepted. Please keep a copy of your essay. Originals cannot be returned.
