The Writing Center

Assessment in writing consists of two primary components -- assessment of student writing and assessment of the program that provides instruction to students.

For the first part of assessment in writing, student writing is assessed according to these criteria and to these grade benchmarks.

For the second part of assessment, the First-Year Writing Director and commitee are committed to critically reflecting on the first-year writing program -- its faculty, curricula, pedagogical methods, and its effects on students.

To this end, the first-year writing director and committee conduct the following regular activities to assess the first-year writing program:

--Reviews student evaluations on first-year writing courses and instructors

--Reviews grades for first-year writing courses

--Observes first-year writing faculty courses and reviews selected evaluated student papers

In addition, special surveys and reports are written to evaluate specific aspects of the program. For example, in spriing of 2009 a survey of students who completed ENWR105 College Writing I was compiled to assess student perspectives on the course.
