Montclair State University Placement Test (MSUPT)

The MSUPT is designed to determine competency levels in reading, upper level math, and chemistry courses and must be taken prior to registering for courses.

The MSUPT also provides information about your individual skills in reading, mathematics and/or chemistry. The result of this test will help you and your academic adviser in making decisions about the kinds of courses you are prepared to take. Therefore, it is very important that you perform to the best of your ability, as your scores will help determine the courses you take.

The following are the MSUPTs offered by Montclair State:

Majors with Required Placement Tests

The majors listed below have required placement tests. If you are an incoming student and change your major to one on this list, please contact our office to schedule your placement test(s).

  • All majors in the School of Business (SBUS): Math Readiness Test
  • All majors in the College of Science and Mathematics (CSAM): Math Readiness Test
    • The following CSAM majors must also take the Chemistry Readiness Test: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Marine Biology, Sustainability Science, Earth & Environmental Science
  • Medical Humanities: Math Readiness Test
  • Exercise Science (Clinical & Pre-Professional Studies Concentration): Math Readiness Test and Chemistry Readiness Test
