{"id":17,"date":"2018-05-14T20:48:40","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T20:48:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alcohol-drugs\/?page_id=17"},"modified":"2019-04-09T12:17:02","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T16:17:02","slug":"alcohol-poisoning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alcohol-drugs\/resources\/alcohol-poisoning\/","title":{"rendered":"Alcohol Poisoning"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Critical Signs<\/h2>\n<p>Alcohol poisoning can be very dangerous and it is very important to get help immediately if a person is experiencing any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Changes to skin color or temperature<\/strong>: Skin that is pale, flushed, cold or clammy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Difficulty breathing:<\/strong> If the person is not breathing normally (slow or irregular breaths).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vomiting:<\/strong> Try to keep the person sitting up. If you cannot, turn them onto their side. DO NOT roll them over on their back.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Having seizures<\/strong>: Turn the person to their side and clear the area to protect the individual from injury.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unconscious\/Semiconscious:<\/strong> Try to wake the person up. If you can\u2019t, turn them onto their side and call <a href=\"tel:911\">911<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Pale or flushed or if their skin is cold and clammy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What You Can Do<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Call <a href=\"tel:911\">911<\/a> or University Police at <a href=\"tel:973-655-5222\">973-655-5222<\/a> IMMEDIATELY! Do not wait for all symptoms to be present.<\/li>\n<li>Gently roll the person on their side to help prevent aspiration (choking) in case the person vomits. If possible, place a pillow on the small of the person&#8217;s back to help maintain the position.<\/li>\n<li>Stay with the person until medical help arrives. DO NOT leave the person alone.<\/li>\n<li>If vomiting occurs, clear airways by sweeping vomited material out of their mouth.<\/li>\n<li>DO NOT give the person a cold shower. This can send the person into shock.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be afraid to seek out medical attention if someone you know has had too much to drink.
