Alumni Association Awards Scholarships at Annual Meeting
brunch The Montclair State Alumni Association Membership Appreciation Brunch and Annual Meeting was held June 11 in the University Hall Conference Center. MSUAA members, scholarship recipients, their families and professors were in attendance. Scholarships for the 2010/2011 academic year were awarded to more than 30 undergraduate and graduate students.

Remembering "Scory" This Fall
Plans are underway to name a seminar room in Finley Hall in memory of Spanishscory professor Teresa de Escoriaza, affectionately known to her students as “Scory,” who taught at Montclair State from 1929 to 1959. On Wednesday, September 22, alumni, students, faculty, and other friends and fans of Scory will gather from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Philip Cohen Conference Room in Dickson Hall for “Celebrating Scory and Her Impact at Montclair State University.”

University News

New Parking Facility Opens
The newest parking facility, located in the middle of the campus (adjacent to Floyd Hall Arena) opened this month, providing parking for 1,500 cars. The 7.5-story deck is designed in the University’s Spanish Mission style, with a walkway at the southern corner of the structure which connects the facility with the existing campus pedestrian circulation system. Following up on the playful take of the University’s motto, Carpe Diem, that the University began with the naming of its cyber-café as Café Diem, the new parking garage will be called CarParc Diem.

Fourth Passaic River Symposium Held
Montclair State University hosted more than 300 educators, scientists, legislators, environmentalists, and industry representatives for the Fourth Passaic River Symposium. Organized by the University’s Passaic River Institute, the symposium has become the most important forum for discussing projects and addressing the environmental issues surrounding the Passaipassaicriverc River. Speakers included Judith Enck, Region 2 administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Bob Martin, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Congressman Bill Pascrell, and Colonel John R. Boulé II, commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District.

NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championships Coming to MSU
lacrosseMontclair State has been selected as the host for the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship. MSU will host the Division III championship in 2012 and the combined Division II and Division III championships at Sprague Field in 2013. The 2012 championship will be held May 19-20. The dates for the 2013 combined championship are May 18-19.

It's Peace Corp and Africa for Recent Grad
Like many of his former classmates, recent Montclair State graduate Besmir “Chris” Ruli is preparing to begin his first full-time job since receiving his diploma. Unlike many of his former classmates however, his job will be located in the western African nation of Senegal. After a year-long application, interview, and nomination process, Ruli has been accepted into the Small Enterprise Development (SED) program of the Peace Corps’ Senegal Business program.

Recent Grad Receives 2010 NJ Distinguished Teacher Award
Recent Montclair State University graduate, Michael Mahadeen, has been named a recipient of the 2010 New Jersey Distinguished Student Teacher award by the New Jersey Department of Education. This award recognizes the state's top 15 student teachers for the academic year from among the thousands of student teachers at the 22 teacher-preparing colleges and universities in the state.
