{"id":211642,"date":"2022-10-17T09:18:04","date_gmt":"2022-10-17T13:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/?p=211642"},"modified":"2022-12-27T12:29:34","modified_gmt":"2022-12-27T17:29:34","slug":"joanne-bowman-82-change-master","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/2022\/10\/17\/joanne-bowman-82-change-master\/","title":{"rendered":"Joanne Bowman \u201982 Change master"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For Joanne Bowman \u201982, life\u2019s common themes center on building relationships and creating transformation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These tenets have defined her career, where she has devoted her professional life to human resources and organizational development roles primarily for higher education and nonprofit organizations. Her work involves coaching, organizational and leadership development, group relations and interpersonal dynamics, which leads to organizational and individual transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy professional focus has been to build and develop the most effective ways for people to communicate \u2013 in person, in teams, peer-to-peer and in families,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At Montclair, Bowman majored in Communication Sciences and Disorders and made sure to experience it all, taking part in many aspects of campus life. She worked steady jobs while a student, including working at Sprague Library.\u00a0 She served as a resident assistant in Webster Hall and was part of the women\u2019s varsity fencing team, intramural basketball and is a member of the national sorority of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., then a city-wide chapter for Montclair and other area schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI got a really wonderful college experience,\u201d she shares. \u201cI wasn\u2019t just a student, I was a member of the Montclair State University community. It was important for me to be part of the life of the University.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She attributes \u201cexperiencing college beyond the classwork\u201d as what helped her grow, and encourages today\u2019s students to put themselves out there and do the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDon\u2019t typecast yourself,\u201d she advises. \u201cDon\u2019t limit your experience to what\u2019s comfortable. College is a safe space to explore, it creates opportunities you never thought of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt did wonders for me,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After completing her undergraduate degree at Montclair, Bowman went on to earn a master\u2019s in Organizational\u00a0Psychology and Change Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University and multiple human resources certifications, including Principles and Practices of Organizational Development as well as Organizational Development,\u00a0Change Management and Consultation, both from Teachers College. She also is certified to provide feedback on professional development, completing the Hogan Assessment and Advanced Feedback certification from Hogan Assessment Systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These skills have fueled a fulfilling career, leading up to her current role as director of human resources at Columbia University Libraries, where she guides strategic human resources, staff development and change management. She has held various human resources positions at Columbia University since 2007, including senior director of human resources for employee and organizational development and director of human resources and staff affairs at the University\u2019s Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health. Earlier in her career, she worked as an employee\u00a0relations manager at New York University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bowman has served as an adjunct instructor at New York University teaching human resources principles and practices and was a group facilitator at Yale School of Management last year for a course in interpersonal and group dynamics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just as she leads organizations in change, Bowman has applied change strategies to her own life, becoming a health and wellness enthusiast that has led her to become a competitive powerlifter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve found my way back to what I enjoyed in my college years \u2013 being involved, being physically active,\u201d she shares. \u201cIt\u2019s important to find what gives you joy\u2026when you identify joy, you see the change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As an alumna and as a resident of Montclair, she has stayed involved as a volunteer leader, serving on a community advisory council between the University and community of Montclair that was active years back, and is currently enjoying her connection and leadership role serving as president for the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/baac\/?wp_logged_in=true\">Black Alumni Advisory Council (BAAC)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0 Similar to her own guiding principles, the overarching themes of the BAAC are building networks and relationships, creating community and giving back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt gives me a sense of being able to give back to current students and recent alumni,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bowman invites alumni to get involved and looks forward to meeting people at the <strong>Black Alumni Advisory Council Gala<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0celebration on Friday, Oct. 28 and at Homecoming\u2019s signature alumni event on Saturday, Oct. 29 \u2013 the Alumni Barbecue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bowman believes in serving the community, and along with contributing to the University\u2019s community connections, she has volunteered as a career coach for United Way of Northern New Jersey since 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One lesson she has learned as a career coach is that everyone has talents to share. \u201cIt\u2019s all about creating connections: what you know can spark something for someone else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI always ask myself how I\u2019m making a difference in someone else\u2019s life,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen you get involved and give back, you never know whose life you are going to touch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Building relationships for better results Business of Building Community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":326,"featured_media":211650,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-211642","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-76_alumni-news-and-events","category-77_alumni-spotlight"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/211642","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/326"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=211642"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/211642\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":211655,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/211642\/revisions\/211655"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/211650"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=211642"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=211642"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=211642"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
