{"id":216695,"date":"2026-02-27T09:41:27","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T14:41:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/?p=216695"},"modified":"2026-02-27T09:47:47","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T14:47:47","slug":"alum-jonathan-edmond-reaches-broadcast-milestone-calling-his-first-nba-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/alumni\/2026\/02\/27\/alum-jonathan-edmond-reaches-broadcast-milestone-calling-his-first-nba-game\/","title":{"rendered":"Marking a Full-Circle Moment"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/responsive-media\/cache\/college-of-communication-and-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/01\/IMG_9003.png.3.2x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-original-image=\"\/college-of-communication-and-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/01\/IMG_9003.png\" \/><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>College of Communication and Media (CCOM) alumnus Jonathan Edmond (\u201822) reached a major professional milestone on December 14, calling his first NBA game, a Brooklyn Nets-Milwaukee Bucks matchup in New York on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.audacy.com\/wfan\">WFAN<\/a>, marking a full-circle moment in a career shaped by hands-on learning, mentorship and persistence.<\/p>\n<p><b>Building a Career in Sports Content and Storytelling<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Edmond serves as senior coordinator of content management for\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bkse.com\/\">Brooklyn Sports &amp; Entertainment<\/a><\/strong>, working across teams including the Brooklyn Nets, New York Liberty and Long Island Nets. Based in one of the world\u2019s largest sports markets, his role allows him to blend storytelling, production and on-air experience at the professional level.<\/p>\n<p>While Edmond\u2019s day-to-day role on the content team does not require him to be on air, the opportunity to call a Nets game grew out of years of broadcasting experience and relationship-building within the organization and at Montclair.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Professional Growth Through Mentorship<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cChris Carrino has been a great mentor to me and has followed my work and growth,\u201d said Edmond of the longtime Nets radio play-by-play announcer. \u201cHe asked me to join the Nets radio broadcasts to sit in for Tim Capstraw while Tim handled color commentary on television.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since joining Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment, Edmond has been open about his goal of becoming a broadcaster and has consistently sought feedback and guidance from mentors within the Nets organization, including Carrino, Capstraw, Ian Eagle and Noah Eagle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJonathan is a terrific young man and very well liked amongst his co-workers. Everyone wants to help him get where he wants to be in his career,\u201d said Carrino, who is also a\u00a0play-by-play announcer for Compass Media Networks and Westwood One.\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s an excellent broadcaster and will get better with experience. His diligence in his preparation stands out. I\u2019m glad we could give him this opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJon is a true student of broadcasting, he\u2019s singularly focused on polishing his skills and developing his craft,\u201d said Ian Eagle, lead play-by-play announcer for the Brooklyn Nets and a national broadcaster for CBS Sports and TNT<span class=\"s1\">.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI know the preparation will always be first rate because of the pride he takes in his job. He\u2019s an absolute pro and the opportunities he\u2019s getting have been earned based on his tireless work ethic and how he treats others. Sky\u2019s the limit!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside of his full-time role as a media manager, Edmond continues to pursue freelance broadcasting opportunities, and credits the ongoing support and feedback from his mentors as instrumental in earning on-air opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/college-of-communication-and-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2026\/01\/IMG_9007-797x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"797\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>CCOM as the Launchpad<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>A Union, NJ native, Edmond began his sports media journey as a transfer student and quickly became deeply involved in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/montclairathletics.com\/sports\/2020\/4\/18\/red-hawk-sports-network\"><b>Red Hawk Sports Network<\/b><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/themontclarion.org\/\"><b>The Montclarion<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing part of Red Hawk Sports Network taught me how to edit, how to be on camera, how to interview and how to truly be a broadcaster. With The Montclarion, I learned how to write and developed patience. All of that transitioned into the person I am today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Edmond\u2019s most memorable student experiences came during RHSN\u2019s first live football broadcast on Montclair\u2019s streaming network\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/streamstak.com\/hawkplus\/\">Hawk+<\/a>. While unexpected technical challenges kept him from calling a game that day, watching his peers successfully bring the live show to air left a lasting impression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing everyone come together and nail that broadcast showed me what preparation and teamwork really looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those lessons proved critical as Edmond transitioned into high-pressure professional environments, including working major events such as the NBA Draft and Heisman Trophy.<\/p>\n<p>Edmond, credits the CCOM faculty and staff for instilling the importance of preparation and confidence when opportunity presents itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen that opportunity comes, you better be ready. That\u2019s something CCOM really taught me. But I felt like I was dreaming,\u201d Edmond said of the Dec. 14 game. \u201cI was super nervous in the beginning, but I locked in and trusted myself because I\u2019ve been working toward this moment. I had a lot of fun and learned so much, and I\u2019ll continue to keep climbing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m extremely proud of Jon,\u201d said\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/profilepages\/view_profile.php?username=whitesidek\">Professor Kelly Whiteside<\/a><\/strong>, who led the Sports Communication program and taught several classes while Edmond was a student. \u201cFrom the day he arrived as a transfer student until the day he graduated, he never stopped learning and never stopped asking questions. He worked so hard on his craft by calling games and being part of our live productions. He is an inspiration to our students, who can look at someone like him and think to themselves, \u2018I can do this, too.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edmond encourages current and prospective students to take full advantage of Montclair\u2019s facilities, experiential learning opportunities and student media organizations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave patience and enjoy the journey, Montclair prepared me for everything I\u2019m facing in this profession.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Montclair classrooms to the NBA airwaves, Jonathan Edmond \u201922 turned preparation and mentorship into a career-defining moment.
