Montclair State MFA Thesis Exhibition at New York Gallery, May 8-30, 2009

"Stimuleye" is a creative collection of thought-provoking works

Montclair, New Jersey-Montclair State University will hold its ninth annual MFA Thesis Exhibition, displaying the creative work of this year's graduating Master of Fine Arts degree students, May 8-30. The exhibition, titled "Stimuleye," will be held at Sideshow Gallery at 319 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn ( Gallery hours are Thursday-Sunday, noon-6 p.m. An opening reception will be held Saturday, May 9, from 6 to 9 p.m.

"Stimuleye" includes drawings, photography, paintings, sculpture, and jewelry by the 12 students in the MFA Class of 2009. They are Patti Jordan and Arthur Harder of Montclair; Mustafa Muhammed and Margarita Zimerman of Bloomfield; Hila Sela and Frank Gavere of Lodi; Kai-Hsuan Hsu of Fort Lee; Teresa Owens of Ringwood; Arlene Kaczka of Kearny; David Keefe of Rochelle Park; Jill McKenna of Eastchester, NY; and Sarah Shewbridge of Martinsburgh, WV.

The exhibition is curated by Matthew Guy Nichols, MFA Critic-in-Residence at Montclair State. "It has been my great and genuine pleasure to work with such a creative and committed group of emergent artists," Nichols said. "Throughout the past academic year, I was continually impressed by their intellectual curiosity, their generous exchanges of honest and constructive criticism, and the mixture of thoughtfulness, industry and risk-taking that propelled much of their work forward."

Nichols says the exhibition's title accurately describes the varied work that will be on display. "Like many other artists, these students have been busy producing stimuli for the past two years," he explained. "As someone who has directly engaged with them and their work in recent months, I can affirm that their stimuli are indeed stimulating, challenging and provocative. This group exhibition is ultimately a much stronger testament to this fact."

The MFA program at Montclair State uses an interdisciplinary approach and is designed to prepare students for careers as practicing, professional artists. The full-time, two-year, in-residence program fosters opportunities for critical discourse in an environment where individuals can collaborate or work independently to make meaningful contributions to contemporary culture.
