{"id":208460,"date":"2020-06-01T17:07:19","date_gmt":"2020-06-01T21:07:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/?p=208460"},"modified":"2020-06-15T17:10:44","modified_gmt":"2020-06-15T21:10:44","slug":"the-red-carpet-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/arts\/2020\/06\/01\/the-red-carpet-online\/","title":{"rendered":"The Red Carpet Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since 2009, Montclair State\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/montclairtheatredance\/\">Department of Theatre and Dance<\/a>\u00a0has hosted the Annual Theatre Night Awards \u2013 also known as the Foxys \u2013 bringing together University alumni and high school theater students and teachers from across New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>The awards program, which was started by a University professor and her students, has had an impact on theater programs statewide by giving drama students and teachers a chance to learn from each other\u2019s best work, as well as a competition that inspires them to raise their game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole program came out of a graduate directing class I was teaching,\u201d says organizer and Montclair State Professor of Theatre Susan Kerner. \u201cMy students were talking about the fact that there was no network for high school drama teachers throughout the state. We decided that year to start the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, as with so many other events, the Foxys pivoted in the face of COVID-19 and were presented in virtual fashion.<\/p>\n<p>As host Peter Filichia said in introducing the 12th Annual Foxys ceremony on YouTube, \u201cThe show must go on!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year was a really special year,\u201d says Kerner, who reported that videographer Steven Flores and producer Christina Cruz (both of whom are University alumni) painstakingly created montages from video footage of theater productions for each nominating category.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was really exciting. If we hadn\u2019t been completely restricted to being at home we wouldn\u2019t have had time to do this,\u201d says Kerner noting that teachers and students usually don\u2019t get to see each other\u2019s work, \u201cbut, this year with the clips, they can see it!\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\">\n<div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">\n<p>The established network that began with these awards has helped high school students find a college home at Montclair State, as well.This year, several Foxy award-winners and nominees have committed to Montclair State for the fall, including Lixangelys Ruiz of Passaic Preparatory Academy, Christine Tanko of Watchung Regional High School, Yazmery Milian of Memorial High School in West New York, and Cooper Mendonssa of Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy in Elizabeth, New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext year, I will be attending Montclair State as a Music Education major and am absolutely thrilled to work with the incredible staff at the John J. Cali School of Music,\u201d says Tanko, who was awarded Best Lead Actress in a Drama for her portrayal of Elizabeth Proctor in\u00a0<em>The Crucible<\/em>\u00a0in 2019. \u201cI am ecstatic for the opportunities the University will grant me and for what my future holds!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Cooper Mendonssa, who won the 2020 Foxy for Best Lead Actor in a Classical Play (<em>Tartuffe<\/em>), the award represents the process of discovering himself through the development of a character, something he\u2019s looking forward to doing more of in college.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m also excited and frankly a little scared to start a new chapter in college life at Montclair State, however, I\u2019m well aware of what I am capable of, so I know I\u2019ll be just fine!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_211957\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/Cooper-Mendonssa-Elizabeth-NJ-1.jpg.0.2x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/Cooper-Mendonssa-Elizabeth-NJ-1.jpg\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cooper Mendonssa of Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy in Elizabeth, New Jersey, will attend Montclair State University in the fall as an Acting major. His drama teacher\/director Sandra Toll earned her MA at Montclair State and is a past winner of the Jo Anne Fox Award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>2020 Theatre Night Awards \u2014 Part 1:<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Video: 2020 Theatre Night Awards - Part 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2qoVqR3-V-Y?feature=oembed\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen style=\"width: 500px; height: 281px; border: 0px solid #000;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 2020 Foxy nominees represent 75 New Jersey middle and high schools that submitted their fall plays for consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The awards were presented by prominent theater professionals working in New York, Los Angeles, London, Singapore and New Jersey \u2013 including University alumni such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slack-redir.net\/link?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.playbill.com%2Fperson%2Frob-mcclure-vault-0000109271\">Rob McClure<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slack-redir.net\/link?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.playbill.com%2Fperson%2Fmia-pinero\">Mia Pinero<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arifrenkel.com\/\">Ari Frenkel<\/a>. A team of Montclair State alumni from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.normalave.org\/\">Normal Ave<\/a>\u00a0theater company \u2013 as well as faculty members Peter Flynn, Rick Sordelet and Jordan Baker Kilner \u2013 helped Kerner reach out to presenters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so much Montclair State presence!\u201d says Kerner. \u201cAnd a huge Montclair State community effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of those 75 schools, Kerner reports that many of the teachers obtained their graduate degrees at Montclair State.<\/p>\n<p>One of those teachers, Jo Anne Fox, who taught theater at Mahwah High School, \u201ccame up with the idea of building our network further and starting this award ceremony,\u201d says Kerner. \u201cMusicals were getting so much attention with the Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards. The straight plays weren\u2019t getting enough attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>2020 Theatre Night Awards \u2014 Part 2:<\/h2>\n<p><iframe title=\"Video: 2020 Theatre Night Awards - Part 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3F__04vH1Hg?feature=oembed\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen style=\"width: 500px; height: 281px; border: 0px solid #000;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Fox died suddenly and unexpectedly soon after the first awards ceremony, and the awards were renamed \u201cFoxys\u201d in her honor.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Jo Anne Fox Award is given each year to two teachers \u2013 one veteran, one newcomer \u2013 \u201cwho create a community in their school around theater.\u201d Ashley Raven \u201915 MA,\u00a0 Theatre Studies, won the newcomer award this year.<\/p>\n<p>Kerner also credited Linda Davidson, assistant dean of the College of the Arts (CART); Sarah Assalone, Student Services and Recruitment Coordinator; Marie Sparks, CART director of Academic Services and Community Outreach; and Kathleen Reddington, CART Administrative Services program assistant, for helping to get the awards off the ground in the formative years.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Kerner dedicated the Education Impact and Community Outreach Award to her mother who died of COVID-19 on April 27, in the midst of work to produce the show. \u201cMy mother was very much a community organizer,\u201d says Kerner. \u201cIt was good for me to do something that she would be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\">\n<div class=\"prpl-column one-third\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_211956\" class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.montclair.edu\/responsive-media\/cache\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/Senior-Portrait-1.jpg.0.2x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-original-image=\"\/newscenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2020\/06\/Senior-Portrait-1.jpg\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christine Tanko won a 2019 Foxy for Best Actress in a Drama playing Elizabeth in the Watchung Hills Regional High School production of\u00a0<em>The Crucible<\/em>. She will attend Montclair State this fall, majoring in Music Education.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"prpl-column two-thirds\">\n<p>The Foxys work to reach and reward schools from all areas and with a wide range of resources. The program also seeks to help schools diversify the material they present \u2013 rewarding original and innovative work with awards like the \u201cThe Peter Filichia Award for Pushing the Envelope in Academic Theatre\u201d and acting categories for works of \u201cInnovation &amp; Invention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This impact can be seen in nominations for Memorial High School in West New York, which produced the original work\u00a0<em>disCONNECT<\/em>\u00a0this year. \u201cThey always write their own shows,\u201d says Kerner. Or for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/burlington-county-institute-of-technology?trk=public_profile_experience-item_result-card_subtitle-click\">Burlington County Institute of Technology<\/a>\u00a0Medford School of Performing Arts which reimagined Macbeth as \u201cThe Scottish Play in a Galaxy Far, Far Away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For their part, teachers and students were appreciative of the University\u2019s work putting the 2020 Foxys together.<\/p>\n<p>Said Beth Baur of Memorial High School in West New York, \u201cMy kids are suffering from food insecurity and housing insecurity, and this was a great moment of celebration and community for a hot minute. So, so grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for being a constant and one of the things that all the students can still depend upon,\u201d wrote Jeff Hogan of West Morris Central High School in an email to Kerner. \u201cYou guys truly did an excellent job still bringing it all to life.
