Study in this field encompasses freshwater lakes and streams, estuaries and coastal marine habitats. These are critical environments for numerous plants and animals, but can be compromised by human activities. Students pursuing this major want to understand the relationships among plants, animals and humans while learning how to protect and restore these necessary ecosystems.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"programs\">Marine Biology and Coastal Sciences Programs<\/h2>\n<div class=\"prpl-row\"><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<p>The interdisciplinary Marine Biology and Coastal Sciences programs utilize the four core sciences: <span class=\"list\">Biology, Geology, Chemistry and Physics<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The program objectives are three-fold:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Provide a well-defined, comprehensive knowledge of the disciplines associated with the coastal sciences and marine biology.<\/li>\n<li>Provide appropriate training for professional employment and knowledge to be prepared for a doctoral program.<\/li>\n<li>Provide students with research experiences applying project development and implementation, data gathering, analysis and interpretation and publication of results.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><div class=\"prpl-column one-half\">\n<figure class=\"responsive-image-holder wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mlt-responsive-image\" data-original-image=\"\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/08\/bologna-aquarium-full-scaled.jpg\" src=\"\/responsive-media\/cache\/biology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/08\/bologna-aquarium-full-scaled.jpg.0.1x.generic.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Bologna describing fish in tank at aquarium\"\/><\/figure>\n<div class='inset red'>\n<p>The Biology department offers opportunities in marine biology for both <strong><a href=\"\/academics\/programs\/bs-marine-biology-and-coastal-sciences\/\">undergraduate<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"\/academics\/programs\/ms-marine-biology-and-coastal-sciences\/\">graduate<\/a><\/strong> students. Research opportunities abound in marine biology, aquatic ecology, geosciences, and environmental sciences for students in the program.
