Eva's Promise: Documentary film screening and panel discussion
Please join the Montclair State University Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Education Project and the School of Communications and Media for a special screening of a new documentary film, Eva’s Promise, featuring a panel discussion with filmmakers and MSU faculty.
This event is free and open to the public, advance registration is required and seating is available on a first come, first served basis.
On a train to Auschwitz following their betrayal, 17-year-old Heinz Geiringer revealed to his younger sister Eva that he had created paintings and poetry during the past two years in hiding, and that his work was hidden beneath the floorboards in his attic hiding spot. Heinz asked Eva to make a promise. If he should die in the camps, retrieve the artwork and show the world, so he would not be forgotten.
The story sits in the shadow of a well-known Holocaust story – The Diary of Anne Frank. After the war, Eva Geiringer Schloss became the posthumous stepsister of her Amsterdam neighbor Anne when her mother married Anne’s father, Otto Frank. While the world knows Anne Frank's story, this film introduces the story of Heinz, his paintings, and his sister’s efforts to find and share her brother's remarkable art with the world.
