ATTENTION NEWS PUBLISHERS: Mobile is a lot more than content on a smaller screen. Mobile is context. Mobile is mapping. Mobile is a machine for capturing sound and pictures and video.

Join the Center for Cooperative Media for an intensive hands-on workshop to help you re-imagine your news product and begin to program mobile apps. Amir Husak, digital artist, technology guru and adjunct professor at both Montclair State's School of Communication and Media and the New School, will help you peek under the hood of your smart phone, understand its various components and begin to imagine how it can change your news operation.

In this one-day workshop, participants will learn about wireframing, touch gestures (drag, flick, swipe, pinch), screen size, menus, responsive design, and sensor integration. They will also explore mobile imaging and media creation, locative media, user-centered design (UI and UX), and mobile usability.

In the second half of the day, using MIT’s App Inventor and Fluid UI, participants will work individually and collaborate in small design teams to develop, build and test basic apps. Although the projects created in this workshop will be for the Android platform, the conceptual framework applies to all mobile operating systems including iOS and Windows.

Note: You do not need programming skills or prior knowledge of the tools used in the workshop, but curiosity and desire to experiment are important. For those workshop participants who use devices with iOS or Windows, an Android phone or tablet will be provided for some of the exercises.
