Reel Montclair: Academy Award Edition

Do you have a passion for the movies? Excited by this year’s Oscar race?

Join other film lovers for an exciting evening of in-depth conversation about the Academy Award nominated films, performances, and crafts, as well as the state of filmmaking today.  Moderated by long time Star-Ledger film critic STEPHEN WHITTY, esteemed critics ALISON BAILES (Sirius XM Insight, More), STEPHANIE ZACHAREK (Time Magazine) and MATT SINGER, (Screencrush, CBS This Morning) will discuss merits of the films and performances that landed the greatest prize in Hollywood, an Oscar nomination.  This FREE event is produced by The Film Institute at Montclair State and New York Film Critic Series and is open to the public, but registration is required.  Reserve your seat here.

Stephen Whitty:

A two-time former chair of the Circle, Stephen Whitty writes for the New York Daily News, The Star-Ledger, nj.com and many other sites, newspapers and national magazines. He has his BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the arts and has taught and lectured at NYU, Rutgers, Baruch, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of the Moving Image and the New York Public Library. He appears regularly as a guest on television and radio, and as a juror at film festivals; his most recent book is “The Alfred Hitchcock Encyclopedia.”

Stephanie Zacharek:

Stephanie Zacharek is the film critic for Time magazine. She was previously chief film critic for the Village Voice and Salon.comand her writing on books and pop culture has also appeared in the New York Times, New York Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, and Sight and Sound. She is a member of the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. She was a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in criticism.

Matt Singer:

Matt Singer is the editor-in-chief and film critic of ScreenCrush.com and the co-host of the Filmspotting: Streaming Video Unit podcast. A member of the New York Film Critics Circle, his work has also appeared in the Village Voice, Indiewire, and The Dissolve, and he is a frequent guest discussing the world of movies on CBS This Morning. Alison Bailes:

Alison Bailes reviews movies for WOR 710am radio, Sirius XM Insight. And www.Bestmoviesbyfarr.com. She also co-hosts the New York Film Critics Series and maintains her own film website www.alisonbailes.com. She has written for More magazine, Parade.com and Fiftyisthenewfifty.com and worked as a correspondent on Roger Ebert presents “At the Movies”. She produced and hosted the BBC.com film series “Flashback”. From 2005-2009 Alison co-hosted the NBC Universal weekly movie review show  “Lyons & Bailes Reel Talk”. She and Jeffrey Lyons shared their different perspectives on the latest film and DVD releases, gave viewers the latest news from the box office and reported on industry trends.
