Continuing studies classes and workshops support students' educational and professional growth.

This workshop uses simulation gaming to understand leadership skills, with special focus on gender issues that may either contribute to or compromise effective leadership. It is co-gender directed by seasoned leaders using both academic and experiential expertise to elicit specific skills and competencies for individuals needing leadership development.

Speakers

Dr. Joan C. Ficke is the Dean of the Graduate School at Montclair State University. Prior to her six year tenure in The Graduate School, Ficke served as Senior Vice Provost in the Office of the Provost, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs for Personnel and Resource Planning, Interim Dean of Students, and the Director of the Women’s Center. She is a professor of Community Health with disciplinary interests in health policy; the organization of health care facilities; health counseling and women’s health issues. Ficke has completed work at Wellesley College in Management Training; Clinical Training in Behavioral Medicine at Harvard Medical School; was a Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson School for Public Policy at Princeton University.

Dr. Joseph T. Moore, Professor Emeritus of History and Social Studies Education, is a noted scholar, historian, and campus leader, the first president of the Faculty Association, subsequently the American Federation of Teachers.  The first recipient of the University’s first Distinguished Teacher award, he prepared teachers for years, in turn, influencing many others throughout New Jersey. He has published on topics ranging from war to sports, and his 1998 biography of Larry Doby, the baseball player who broke the color barrier in the American League in 1947 won the Carter G. Woodson Award for Excellence. This remains the pre-eminent piece on this subject.
