“World Literature and World Legislation: Romanticism and British Imperialism”
Professor Manu Chander
(University of Rutgers-Newark)

  • Date: Monday, February 26
  • Time: 11:30 a.m.
  • Location: Dickson 179*

Professor Chander will talk about his new book Brown Romantics: Poetry and Nationalism in the Global Nineteenth Century. This study demonstrates the importance of Romantic notions of authorship to such poets as Henry Derozio (India), Egbert Martin (Guyana), and Henry Lawson (Australia), using the work of these poets, each prominent in the national culture of his own country, to explain the crucial role that the Romantic myth of the poet qua legislator plays in the development of national movements across the globe.
