Wizards, Markets, and Meat Without Animals: the Rhetoric of Plant-Based and Cell-Based Meat Innovation

Silicon Valley-styled startup companies are making it their goal to disrupt animal agriculture, they promise that a combination of food science, artificial intelligence, and biotechnological tools can be used to create plant-based and cell-cultured meats that will feed the world meat without actually raising and slaughtering animals. While the potential of these innovations to reduce animal suffering is clear, less established is whether they will actually be good for diverse stakeholders of eaters, farmers, and workers and how these new food technologies might promote food justice for all.

Garrett Broad is an Assistant Professor Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University and the author of More Than Just Food: Food Justice and Community Change (University of California Press, 2016). His research investigates the role of storytelling and communication technology in promoting networked movements for social justice. Much of his work focuses on local and global food systems, as he explores how food can best contribute to improved neighborhood health, environmental sustainability, and the rights and welfare of animals.
