Karen Swan, University of Illinois, Springfield, presents this seminar.
We know that teaching online is different from teaching face-to-face, and that in some ways the difficulty of moving courses online is exacerbated for mathematics offerings. Indeed, different approaches are needed to achieve similar effects in each format. This seminar will review what the research tells us about teaching mathematics online. Interestingly, both approaches emphasizing social interaction and automated, individualized learning approaches have proved effective. In addition, Karen will draw on her experience teaching teachers online for over 20 years to answer questions in what will hopefully be a highly participatory seminar.
