Dr. Rachel Melamed, Postdoctoral Scholar, University of Chicago, presents a seminar as a candidate for the Department of Biology's Computational Biologist position.

Abstract

Cancers result from mutations accumulated over a lifetime, but they also may be influenced by factors including other diseases, environment, and medical treatments. There is now an increasing amount of data available to investigate cancer, which can help us understand the disease and predict, prevent, and treat it. While projects to sequence the genomes of thousands of tumors have created comprehensive views of cancer mutations, massive health care records data profile the general population. In this talk I will discuss my work using both tumor sequencing and health care data to understand cancer.  Combining molecular and clinical information on patient health, we can create a richer view of disease processes at work in the early stages of cancer development.
